The Strain: TV Review

Posted by

LOL this show.

I was looking for a decent horror/zombie/end of the world kind of show and found something called Strain. Looked like it ticked all the bozes so I gave it a go…

This manages to put so many tropes into the first few episodes and does them really poorly, including an old guy giving wise advice that the authorities aren’t listening to because he sounds like crazy old grandpa. Which is unfortunate because it’s the guy who plays Walder Frey in Game of Thrones.

The dialogue is a bit cheesy, and the acting is just ‘okay’.

There’s a lot of the classic “why would you do that??!” moments where the characters are clearly walking into a dangerous situation and everyone knows it but them – but they SHOULD know it.

I watched a good portion of the first season, I don’t remember how many episodes but at least 10 – I gave it a good try and decided I wasn’t going to waste anymore time trying to get to ‘the good stuff’ because I don’t think it was coming. Basically the plot thus far had been some nut job/demon from Germany shipped this thing to the USA that contained some sort of virus that turns people into wacked out demons. Wacked out demons that don’t like the sun apparently – maybe later on they’re going down the vampire-ish angle?

You may enjoy this if you like cheesy horror stuff, or something to scare the kids.

Overall: 6.25/10

IMDB 7.4/10 they were a bit more generous

Rotten Tomatos 78% even more generous

So, its possible I’m just being an ass πŸ˜€

  1. Don’t worry Brittany, you’re not being an ass; this show was laughably bad in every way. At least you bailed out sooner than I did. I made the mistake of watching season two on the assumption it couldn’t possibly be worse than the first season. Boy was I wrong. The only improvement was Corey Stoll stopped wearing that ridiculous wig. πŸ˜‰

    1. LOL well that’s good to hear someone else thought it was pretty bad too – when I was writing this and went to go on imdb to get the score I was really surprised, then even more suprised by rotten tomatos. It’s soooo bad. That wig was truly terrible, good decision taking it off.
