SPFBO 11: Judge intro and batch break down!

Posted by

Hello to all my lovely SPFBO people!

It’s that time again, time to read through the “slush pile” of the 30 books randomly assigned to our group!

BRIEF INTRO:

Our group consists of me (Esme) and Kristen over on Superstardrifter.com!

We have been a team since forever and why mess with a good thing? We are back again this year as a duo. For those of you who are unfamiliar, a brief intro.

Kristen and I have a lot of overlapping taste, for instance, we both enjoy genres like epic, steampunk, comedy, urban, historical, high fantasy, low fantasy, whodunnits, litrpg, wuxia, horror, etc. However, we’ve also got some areas where our tastes diverge. I can enjoy a romantasy, (looking at you T. Kingfisher books), but I am exceedingly picky, and unfortunately, I usually bounce off heavy romance-focused books. While we were reviewing for the champion’s league, Kristen’s first pick was Reign and Ruin, while that title was tenth on my list, lol. But our opinions come back together quick since my no. 1 was Small Miracles, and that was her no. 2 – we both dig comedy. I’m a big fan of military fantasy and flintlock fantasy, whereas that’s more hit and miss for Kristen.

So, that’s how we’re dividing the books and how we always have in the past. Kristen gets all the kissy books, YA books, and fantasy of manners books, while I’ll take the military fantasy, flintlocks, and darker type books.

We balance each other.

THE PROCESS:

I tend to read fast and get out reviews quickly. Normally. Times aren’t normal and last year was a horrible year of reading/reviewing for me. That said, I feel pretty motivated right now. I’ve already read my first entry as I’m typing this intro post.

We tend to make a post when we either 1.) have three cuts to post 2.) one of us finished a book and liked it enough to give it its own full review. We tend to post cuts first, but it’s really a matter of which criteria we hit first.

I used to try and keep us on a schedule. I’m not doing that to us this year, lol.
