Hubie Halloween – Halloween Review

Posted by

I’d like to review a bunch of random horror/halloween stuff people may want to try for Halloween night – as I assume most people will be in and not out at parties. So, I’m going to watch a handful of horror movies and see how many I can get through and review by the 31st.

I’ve never been a big Adam Sandler fan, he’s very hit or miss, and it’s mostly miss. I don’t know why I decided to watch this other than it’s near Halloween, I hadn’t seen any of his stuff in a while, and I had nothing else better to do – this is Netflix entertainment at it’s finest hour.

This movie was batshit ridiculous. It was SO bad I had to keep watching for the same reason people look at roadkill. They went full Sandler with this one – the humor is not mild-Sandler like in 50 First Dates, it was even weirder than his most immature stuff like Little Nicky.

Sandler plays a man named Hubie who has been a loser ever since he was a kid. The whole town thinks he’s a moron and there’s a very exaggerated hatred towards him with people throwing things at him, and being extra mean in a way you don’t usually find in real life. The producers or Sandler (probably Sandler) decided to have Hubie speak with an ‘I’m an idiot’ kind of voice and it drove me crazy through the whole movie. I actually think a lot of the jokes and humor would have landed better had he just… spoke with his regular voice. Hubie lives in Salem and of course this town goes nuts during Halloween but the thing is, Hubie gets scared by benign Halloween decorations and scared shitless by the more intense and grotesque costumes. He gets a new neighbor shortly before Halloween who says things like “if you hear loud noises coming from the house there’s no need to come see if anything’s wrong”. Of course that neighbor happens to be Steve Buscimi, because why wouldn’t it be? For the first third of the movie Hubie is just bumbling around and it seems the entire purpose is to display just how much the entire town hates him except for the one really hot woman, Julie Bowen.

I was going to give up on this and then finally the horror aspect to this kicked in, of course this was not intended to be a “scary” movie, but the trailer did hint that this wouldn’t be a straight comedy and there would be horror elements to it. People did start disappearing 45 minutes into the movie, presumably victims of a mad serial killer.

There were a lot of cameos in this, as is typical for Happy Madison Productions. Ray Liotta, Rob Schnieder, Maya Rudolph, Tim Meadows, Kenan Thompson, Ben Stiller, Shaquille O’Neal etc. If you want to watch a bunch of celebs do stupid shit for brief periods of time, this could be for you! Or, maybe if you smoke a LOT of weed. Considering this was a Sandler flick, there actually weren’t many dick jokes, foul language, or sex innuendo – so kids may enjoy this one too.

Score: 4/10

IMDB rates this a 5.3/10
