I’ve Been Tagged for 20 Questions

Posted by

I opened up wordpress and saw I had been pinged by JeroenThoughts  in his 20 Questions post.

Hey, why not?

  1. How many books is too many books in a series?

I mean, my favorite series of all time, Discworld, has 41 novels in it, so I guess if done well I can just keep going and going….

But, generally speaking, 5-6 is where I start to max out and stop caring.

2. How do you feel about cliffhangers?

Eh, it depends on how invested I am in the story and if the next book is already out. Generally, I think it makes for a cleaner read if things aren’t left on a jarring note. Maybe a few unanswered questions or a threat looming in the background, but those literal “will they won’t they die” types of cliffhangers get on my nerves.

3. Hardback or Paperback?

I used to read physical copies but not so much anymore. Hardbacks look nicer and last longer, so if I still had room for more physical books I’d be buying hardbacks.

4. Favorite Book?

Thud! by Terry Pratchett, it’s a wonderful pinnacle to the Sam Vimes character arc.

Least Favorite Book?

I’ve read a lot of weird stuff, and stuff that wasn’t to my taste, but there was one book sent to me by an author for a review that had over 277 spelling and grammar issues in less than 200 pages.

Love triangles: Yes or No?

GTFO with love triangles, I almost always have a volatile reaction to those stories.

The most recent book you just couldn’t finish?

I almost always finish books, especially if they are review requests. There has been only one book that I DNF’d recently and it was Dancing in the Dust by Gwendolyn Pendraig – it had graphic and highly visualized rape scenes in basically every chapter and it was just too much for me.

A book you’re currently reading?

I just finished reading Sorcerous Rivalry, one of my SPFBO books this evening, so I haven’t started on another yet.

The last book you recommended to someone?

We Ride the Storm by Devin Madson, it’s an incredibly dark and bleak book but I couldn’t put it down. Also in SPFBO, just not in my group.

Oldest book you’ve read by publication date?

I have no idea, probably one of my grandmother’s old bibles she used to keep around the house from the 1700’s.

Newest book you’ve read by publication date?

If ARC’s count, Foundryside won’t be published until August.

Favorite Author?

Sir Terry Pratchett.

Buying books or borrowing books?

I always buy, I never remember to return things – not even to the library. It results in fines more costly than the book.

A book you dislike that everyone else seems to love?

Robin Hobb stuff. It’s well written and I see the appeal, I just can’t get behind Fitz, he drives me insane.

Bookmarks or Dog-Ears?

Depends on what book, a trade paperback I don’t mind dog-earing, but a nice hardback I’ll go out of my way to find a bookmark.

A book you can always reread?

Getting repetitive here, but Discworld. To choose something different – Heartstriker series has an excellent audiobook I throw on whenever I’m in a foul mood.

Can you read while hearing music?

Nope. But I can listen to audiobooks and multitask that way.

One or multiple POV’s?

I tend to prefer multi, I can get through a book with a character I don’t like, but if that character is the only one in the book it makes it a real struggle.

Do you read a book in one sitting or over multiple days?

Depends on length. Mostly. I have been known to crush 700 page books in a day, but I have to be very motivated.

A book you’ve read because of the cover?

Benedict Patricks covers are absolutely stunning.
